Here's Pete's fourth set of Summer Quiz Questions! As in previous rounds, please don't use search engines to look up answers for posting. It defeats the purpose of the piece, as well as ruining the effort Pete has made. No merit is gained either way as questions are intended for fun. If you only know part of an answer, put it up for the discussion of others - it might lead us to the whole answer! Expanding on an answer, giving full reasoning is positively encouraged - so away we go again...
THE SUMMER QUIZ 2016 - ROUND FOUR
1. How did a divorce in Ipswich clear the way for eventual downfall of royalty.
2. In what way did a Chinese riddle with potentially fatal consequences lead to a sleepless night.
3. What is the somewhat rocky connection between one of the original thirteen and a Scottish city.
4. How did the Admiralty connections of this observer and recorder of everyday life lead to his having a street named after him in an East coast port.
5. During the battleship era and probably even today where naval guns are concerned and English is spoken what is the word used to order their use and why.
6. John, Sam, Adrian,Bridget, Victoria and Tony - all did what?
Complete and explain the following sequences - note that the basis for the sequence may be different for each list.

15. What is the connection between a visually impaired mendicant , a man in a hat , and an evil twin.
16. Always dodgy these - Which is the odd one out - Primrose, Hyacinth, Violet, Myrtle, Lily, Begonia, Poppy.
17. After making their names (it might be said) as respectively - Queen of England, In Outer Space and in Albert Square they went on to pursue another career - who are / were they and what was it did they did next.

Question 10 is the numbers round a dartboard. The next I think is 6...
As for Q3, I'm assuming the "original thirteen" refers to the original colonies that declared independence from the Crown to form the US, but that's as far as I've got so far...

2. I've just seen Aretha Franklin singing Nessun Dorma on the One Show...
Nessun Dorma means "none shall sleep" and Turandot, from which it comes, has a plot involving having to answer riddles to win the princess's hand (or something like that.) Presumably, getting the answers wrong has undesirable consequences...

13. Definitely the alternative history where Germany won. I've read the Sansome one and remember enjoying it. Can't quite remember the title though, not going to check back as against the spirit.
18. Sounds like the criteria for a place to be a British protectorate or territory. Vague memories of post offices being key.

With Q3 I'm not sure about the original 13 bit - as Jon said maybe the original states, but is the rocky connection to a Scottish city Arthur's Seat? Or Edinburgh Castle?

Your reasoning is correct, but the order is "Engage", not shoot.

3. Granite City is Aberdeen and New Hampshire is the Granite State.

14. Not many monarchies left , so I'll go for Belgium. It got independence from the Netherlands in 1830/1 and a monarchy was established with some German prince being hauled in. I think Belgium neutrality was ensured at the same which was broken by the Germans in 1914.

If actors who became politicians is the right line of thinking then I will add Michael Cashman, the ex-Eastenders actor who became an MEP. No idea about the Outer Space link though.

Just a lurker these days but so gratifying that some old traditions have been retained. Back in the day, the Old Pete Summer quiz was something I looked forward to ahead of the approching season - rarerly did i ever find an answer and that tradition hasnt changed - well done Pete as always.

Hi Stella - Ok - right person - wrong show - but near enough. with all due deference to your seniority, Stella , it refers to something at a time that was for most people - pre Television.
