Great to see Teimana back, should add some 'scrap' in Adendorff's absence although I'd like to see them in tandem at some stage. That's an exciting but inexperienced backline bar Francis who I presume will have a lot of leadership responsibility.

Forgot to add...

Not available for selection

Shaun Adendorff (knee), Owen Franks (foot), Danny Hobbs-Awoyemi (achilles), Nick Isiekwe (concussion), Courtney Lawes (pectoral), Matt Proctor (calf), and Kayde Sylvester (achilles).

Looks like a good selection, hope Jimmy G goes well. Big T completely out of it. Feels like we are a bit lightweight without Nick I and Tonks on the bench, maybe that’s why we have Grays come in to get some territory?

I’m guessing Nick is due a rest weekend as he must have racked up some mileage this season.

tomorrow’s forecast is very windy with a bit of rain, makes sense why we have Furbs, Grays, Francis, Freeman who can all kick out of hand well and Ollie S isn’t bad either

Anybody know why Matavesi isn't playing? I think we may struggle in the line out against DeJager.

Good to see Teimana & James back. Feel we have missed a trick a bit by not having played James yet in this window. While i see what Furbank offers playing at10 I think we have been lacking in general game management which primarily come from 9 & 10. The bread & butter skills & knowledge being your natural position can’t be underestimated

I for one am glad Grayse is back. I get Furbank is a talent and an options at 10 and needed a trial there- if needed he can slot in. Grayse has so much talent in that particular position with territory management game plan and hope he has been working on his weaknesses and impresses this weekend.

Overall on paper Sale are huge and will be physically dominant, it will be a tough day but let’s see what are young guys can do.

As a side note: starting 15 are all English qualified- 13 of which are from our academy. In the 23 I think 16 are from the academy. Only Api (and Hutch- Scotland) are “non-English” which is credit for what Boyd and the coaches were trying to acheive.

Not surprised Grayson is at 10, was expecting it tbh. Let's hope he comes back and controls the game well.

Pack looking a little lightweight and going to miss Matavesi. Good to see Teimana back, could be difficult upfront tomorrow.

Very sensible selection. James Grayson has to return . Dingwall rewarded. Hutch and Big T are little off at the moment. Matevesi takes a rest. Api for a bit of size late on.

Realistically , this a tough one . Sale stuffed with giant Saffies .

Keep on the right side of Mr Carley. He's loving it at the moment. Every chance the red card will be out again..make sure it's not us.

I really hope he does provide territory management and game plan. That should be his key skill set but IMHO he hasn’t offered it thus far. Maybe because Boyd’s style hasn’t been accommodative to it, but with our improved pack and the conditions on Saturday we really need him to show it.

Agree with this. Furbs needs more time at 10, but to me he had done plenty of good stuff in his limited outings at 10 so far. I think George at 10 and Freeman at 15 will be our preferred combination going forward. Having Piers back at 12 is good news in terms of backline defence and organisation.

Grays will have a point to prove which could work either way.... we'll see I suppose!

I think Matavesi was due a rest but isn't he actually the smallest of the hookers? Not that I think that's the most important factor but we won't lose any bulk with the swap there.

Interesting on the English qualified front, I wonder whether anyone can say when that was last shown in the Premiership? I have this hazy memory of one team (could have been Sale) fielding what was accused of being a weakened side just to get more EQP's on the pitch to meet some quota or payment from the RFU?

Think that we will probably lose, the pack not being as strong.
I hope Grayse plays well and manages to keep his place.
Sale tend to kick penalties and build up a lead, I can see this happening again, that will mean Saints will puch things to get back into the game and that is sometimes their undoing.
Would certainly be a good game to win though.

Guessing they've decided to rest Matavesi after a few heavy weeks and with an eye on the Bristol game which should suit him slightly more anyway?

The odd think from our perspective is that the Sale entire 23 is Caucasian. I can’t remember that happening in top club rugby for a long long time.

Re: Match Thread - Saints v Sale - Teams Up

At the minute it seems a competition between how many mistakes Sale can make against how many penalties we can give away. Pretty poor from both sides so far.

I take the opposite view and blame the players, Marshall and Moon were both instructed by the ref and didn’t react. I appreciate not all the penalties were like this

My wife who watches all of a half of rugby a season has just commented on how much bigger the Sale players looks compared to saints.
Luckily it’s a game for all sizes and we’ve got some skillful backs who can unlock their defence!
We need to play with the backs a bit more as not going to outmuscle them up front

Coaches have identified that last week we had acres of space in behind their defence and never dinked it through. It’s a great option to keep the defensive line on their heels.

Good work

Very decent first half. Grayson going well at 10. Painter having a blinder as are Harrison and Freeman.

Feel for the way Furbank has been treated by EJ, I think in time Freeman will be our starting 15.

Not where I thought we would be at half time
Well played saints

James at 9 is a revelation
Great pass off the base
Giving Grayson time to play his game
Great kick
Covers in defence well

Ludlum is a dynamo

Painter chasing everything

Let’s hope we can build on that 40 in second half

I would imagine Sanderson is blowing a gasket at the minute. Good gameplan and for once we are sticking to it. I cannot see Sale making so many mistakes in the second half but as StBuckby said we have the wind and the slope. This will be a great win if w can finish the job given who we have out.

This is straight on the half backs and captain. From kickoffs set everything up with blockers and kick the bleeding ball out near halfway. It’s not rocket science.

Another rubbish exit with Grays having to kick left footed
The half backs need to get a bleeding grip here

Its the right decision, just great line speed from Sale.

Pass to Grayson is fast and on target.

I think that's a really good win. We didn't fire many shots but in defence we were fantastic. The scrums improved at a rate of knots and in James, Dingwall, Freeman and Sleightholm our backline is packed with potential.

We should have beaten Sale first game of the season, so pleased the boys got it over the line today.

We've got a range of talented backs. We'll need them all. Jimmy Grayson has had his doubters recently. Those two long range penalties and the confidence to take them, won us the match.

Last night Umaga Jacob was a little boy lost for Wasps . He looked like he could cry when he came off. It's a hard game but every player needs understanding and support. I bet Jimmy Gopperth put his arm around Umaga after the game.

I must watch a different game. I thought TJ had a good game, his passing is very good, he kicks good distance and runs good support lines. But he had 2 blocked kicks that got us into trouble. He failed to control play after 2 restarts which led to 2 tries and the onyl reason Sale got back into the game, either by not kicking the ball out or by passing to James under pressure (yes Sale had good line speed but no prem team should be unable to exit their 22) and gave a bad hospital pass to Api on the halfway in the last 5 minutes which led to a knock one and again nearly cost us. He is playing very well but I think the hyperbolic praise is mainly by the Mitchell bashers looking to prove a point.

In life things are never as bad or as good as you think. TJ is probably better than I expected but not as good as some think. Important to note that our pack has been much better in the last 3-4 games, I am keen to see how Alex goes with that platform and in reasonable conditions - typically players are drafted into the England squad for a reason.

I think that's incredibly harsh. JJ looks good in my opinion, about 20 years old, already experienced a fair bit of first team rugby and has played in NZ. Is a good hard tackler, lineout option and as proved today a turnover threat. I think he'll be a great player for us in time, just makes a few mistakes but he's young, it'll come.

Though 9&10 were excellent. James very good and considering how little rugby Grayson has had thought he too was very good. We were outmuscled for the most part but hung in there lived off scraps and took the points. Amazing what a good 9&10 bring to the party. Found Sale’s performance very odd, very off colour.

I thinks that is a disservice to our forwards. They scored 2 pushover tries but we won more scrum penalties and I thought we broadly nullified their pack. We also didn't concede any breakdown turnover penalties, they didn't slow up our ball. They had territory possession but we looked quite comfortable. Last time we played them at home they ran straight over us.

JG kicking at goal superb.

Not a Mitchell basher at all. I'm a fan and think he's got lots of potential, but based on recent form James is our starting 9, no doubts for me on that.

Bit harsh that you've singled out James' alleged mistakes, if someone did that about Mitchell in the Exeter game you would've had a hissy fit and plethora of excuses.

Two cracking 9's we have, great position to be in. Mitchell needs to fight to reclaim the shirt imo,

Fair play, didn’t réaliser he was only 20. I guess when we’ve being watching Isiekwe all season and he is only 22, then perhaps draw comparisons to what is possible at that age. Will Tonks be as good as Isiekwe in 2-years?

C-grade is perhaps harsh but I think he gave away some silly penalties which come with inexperience, such as being in front of the kick chase and not retreating, which led to Sale’s first choice.

Another good young player coming through the ranks

That seems pretty fair. I thought James was especially impressive today playing against a world class 9 behind one of the best packs in the premiership he more than held his own and probably even edged him. Saints do seem to be getting more and more people standing up to be counted.

Well played Saints to grind out that win.
WP. Perhaps the flipside is that as a huge supporter of Mitchell, you are looking for the negatives in other 9's.
Very few I would suggest are Mitchell bashers as we can all pretty much see he has the potential and is very good at times. If you read through the vast majority of comments on here, they praise several players of which one consistent name is rightly James. Boyd specifically called him out too (perhaps he is a Mitchell basher).
On form, I think most would pick Tom James at 9 right now however thankfully we have a couple of pretty talented guys in that position.

Overall we played very well. James is in a real purple patch so keep playing him while he is. The only area we were off today was the lineout and with Lawes, Ribbans and Isiekwe missing thats understandable.

It wad great to see Grayson back and boy did he put his hand up with those long range kicks. Another string to his bow.

Sale are a very good team but even though i have laughed about it i hadn't realised quite how many South Africans they have. They might end up playing teams full of kids again come the end of season to get their quota in.

Not many were confident of a win beforehand, so that was a tonic. McGinty had a poor day with the boot but that’s their problem. Grayson kicked well for us overall.

Good defence, managed the card period well (for once?) A feather in their cap and part of the learning curve for a young team.

Re: Match Thread - Saints v Sale - Teams Up

Now that I watched, I am really not sure what to make of the Sale game, except happy with the result. But another poor match where Saints spent most of the time defending, mostly in their 22 and closer in. No real attacking consistency or fluency except for a few rare flourishes. Getting wins like this is tough to watch and is not really sustainable. The attack across the board needs to improve quickly.

On the plus side both Freeman and Sleightholme look great for young players with obviously strong futures ahead of them. At 9 I thought James had his plus and minus moments with the ball, but did do well keeping de Klerk from doing too much damage. The rest of the backs are hard to judge due to lack of any consistent attack. But not sure Grayson was the problem there.
Saints forwards did look pretty good at the breakdown, but, had trouble creating turnovers until far inside our 22. Those last few minutes Sale were eating us up until that intercept by Wood (big Wood fan, btw). In other words, a win is a win, but we need to really get the attack moving.

Fair points but add Lawes, Ribbans, Matavesi, Isiekwe and Adendorff to that pack and I think we have more possession and the backs have more chance to shine.

Good summary. Our attacking threat was next to non existent today bar the try, but the defence was solid for the best part against a heavy pack! Decision making was much better too. I think that came from playing Grayson, who is a proper 10, so understands more about game management.

Sale are probably feeling perplexed how they lost this one, but they were off the pace today..

I’m not sure we know what our best starting team is, especially our backs. For me still Mitchell / Biggar, but anyone’s guess from 11 to 15??

With Bristol next week, we’ve got to look to improve our attack to secure 5 points in some of the remaining games if we are going to make the play offs. The current top four look strong..

[quote Duckonstilts]Overall we played very well. James is in a real purple patch so keep playing him while he is. The only area we were off today was the lineout and with Lawes, Ribbans and Isiekwe missing thats understandable.

Don’t forget Matavesi

Considering the size of the Sale pack, I thought our forwards did admirably well especially at the scrum. Last season we would easily have lost that match but you have to admire the grit and determination shown. Don't think Alex Sanderson would be too happy with his team's performance. The commentary team for the match on BT was top notch. Well done, Daisy. Considering all the main line out option operators were missing, one would expect problems there. Still think we need an authoritative leader - shows how much Dylan and others around him operated. Would like to see our Director of Rugby a little more animated at times!!

Team played well
I’m happy to support the guys that took the field
Even applaud them for their efforts

Don’t know why you have to be so negative against some players

Yes very strange behaviour, especially as Boyd picked him out for praise, maybe Boyd is one of the Mitchell bashers StBuckby talks about? Why anyone would want to pick him out for special criticism on yesterdays performance I have no idea.

I'm savouring a backs to the walls, against the odds victory. Compare our defence, scrum and commitment v Sale to how we were playing end of last season and we have the most important foundations. Attack is hard when you're spending a lot of the time desperately defending. Attack is the area Boyd excels at. It will be a lot easier when players return from internationals.

How many Saints players were missing compared to Sale?

Hobbs-Awoyemi, Matavesi, Franks, Lawes, Ribbans, Adendorff, Mitchell, Biggar, Big T, Proctor, Hutchinson.

Bar Tuilagi, Curry and Yarde, Sale had more of their first team and big guns like de Klerk and de Looger.

This isn't really correct. Whilst they might be out, some are not included due to form (Big T) or Hutch on the bench. And how many of the others would start? Hobbs isnt a guaranteed starter at all, same with Franks. Mitchell would be on the bench with James' current form.

Starting Adendorff would mean sacrificing one of our back row who all played superbly yesterday...and then we'd claim that the player he replaced was missing.

We had a cracking win yesterday, I personally don't see why people make these comparisons, but then disregard other teams lack of starters (Bath or Wasps games greats examples).

Sale were also missing Van Rensburg who was their best player in the last game against us. It should also be Curry x 2. Overall, I think we had slightly more out than them but certainly nowhere near the imbalance we have seen the other way in some of our games eg Bristol.

Re: Match Thread - Saints v Sale - Teams Up

Of course they are relevant, but I don't really think we miss Hobbs/Franks massively?

Lawes, Ribbans, Isekwie & Biggar all come back and start imo as with Matavesi.
Addendorff or Harrison are both top performers, one starts imo.

Mitchell on the bench.

I wasn't saying we don't miss those players, rather some players playing now are there on form whilst others you mentioned are dropped due to their form (Big T, Hutch).

Imo, we had 5 starters out, they had 4? (add Solomona). Maybe they had more, I don't know their squad in depth. B.Curry starter?

I think we can all agree that if this was 2020, Saints lose this one late. Can't put a finger on the reason, but there is some steel in the defense compared to last year.
Still also wonder why the attack is still, politely said, inconsistent. I know Sale kept possession very well, but to become a good team, we need to see the attack sharpen up quite a bit. Six Nations call ups impact most teams so without drilling down too deeply, we can consider that a wash for this game. We still had Freeman and Sleightholme, Furbank and Francis, so the backs could have done more if we had a little more ball. And I don't think there was much of an opportunity for Grayson with so little possession.

I forgot about Isiekwe. So that's between 8-10 best matchday 23 missing.

So over a third of your best players missing is likely to impact attacking potency.

We lost a lot of lineouts which took away attacking opportunities. Matavesi, Lawes, Ribbans and Isiekwe would have made a difference.

A British Lion at 10 and England squad 9 would have made a difference in attack. We had some counter-attacking opportunities we didn't exploit. James has to stay on to near the end and was tiring.

Adendorff would have made a difference instead of Tonks would conceded 2 penalties.

Proctor has been one of our best players, it's just whether he's on the wing or centre.

Personally I'd have Big T over Freeman on the wing.

Understand your point, but it doesn't really work like that from what I've seen. Against Bath we only had Lawes & Biggar out? And if you want to include match day players, Bath had around 12/13 players out in total, yet we still lost.

Yesterday we were missing a few key players, yet won. So when we are missing several players we win and when we're full strength against weakened opposition we lose (Bath, Bristol).

Nothing indicates that having the best paper on team available equates to us winning, although it is logical to assume that is the way.

Really pleased with the win, Sale were arguably slightly off form but I think we can take credit for some of that at least. Some very good performances and quite a few that will continue to improve though experience - there's some with only a handful or premiership games.

Also really enjoyed Daisy's commentary, didn't feel the need to talk constantly but really added insight where relevant. Loved his pre game Twitter comment about perceived bias which got some good bites.

How could you mix us up? I'm sure we look quite different.
I know we had a lot of players out, but our attack has not been great, except in spurts. And the back line had enough good quality talent to play better than it did. We did need more ball from the breakdowns, but still I don't think we can say our attack is even in the top 6 clubs and probably lower. According to the Premiership Table on the BBC, Saints have scored 222 points so far this season (and yes, I know this is not the only measure of attacking competency, but is indicative). The only teams which have scored fewer points are Worcester at 172 and Newcastle at 191. Not sure how the Covid matches factor into this, but still indicative.

It's where we end up that counts. I'm confident we can make top 6, but also realistic to the fact we could finish 7th/8th. As I've mentioned before, games against Worcs, Falcons, Irish and Tigers will most likely determine this.

4 of our next 6 games are against those mentioned with Bristol (next weekend) and Gloucester the exceptions. Crucial games.

Didn't we lose 3 games to Covid (2 "wins", 1 "loss")? That's 1/4 of our games so far, so hardly surprising that we're down on points scored! Average per game (as mentioned by Statesman) is a much better indicator this season, otherwise you're comparing apples with tractors (as a former head of finance used to say).

We're also in 5th when it comes to tries conceded per match with 2.7, Exeter are top with 1.46, Bath are sitting bottom on 3.92

However on points conceded per game we're down in 8th, on 23.8, which would be a big indicator of what we already know, our penalty count is way too high.

Worcester (24.27). Gloucester (24.46), Wasps (26.38)and Bath (29.58) concede more. Exeter lead the table with 15.08

It was interesting that onSaturday, we gave away 4 penalties in the first 5 mins (literally 5 mins), then only gave away ( think) 4 more in the rest of the game? No idea how many Sale conceded.

Ah ok, thanks. So I was slightly off. I thought Sale would've conceded more as they seemed to get penalised more at the scrum, at least that was my interpretation.

Progress nonetheless, especially as Sale normally have a pretty low pen count? and stringent defence.

We need to work on discipline. A penalty inside 30 seconds 2 weeks running is just a killer. Also, 2 weeks running we have given away a kick chase offside penalty were the player has been specifically told by the referee to stop - cost us 10 points.

Re: Match Thread - Saints v Sale - Teams Up

Over the last 4 games (as that is when ESPN started putting full match stats up again) Sale have averaged 12.5 penalties per game, saints 11.5.

A cursory glance, as I really need to get some work done, would suggest to me that saints penalty count may not be as high as we think but we are giving them away in more dangerous areas, problem is as I only have 4 matches out of 10 to base this on, it's entirely conceivable that we are conceding less as the season goes on, which would also go hand in hand with the improvements in the scrum.

Definitely a few unforced errors in some of our pens. Exiting our 22 has generally been really poor.

Yes, makes sense Ted for our pens to be reducing in line with scrum improvement which has only been the last 4/5 games.

Matt Carley and Wayne Barnes were working with the England team in the week. At times they were deliberately giving wrong decisions to help the England players with their reactions to things going against.
Take a look at those first ten minutes on Saturday. Perhaps he thought he was still with England.

It would be interesting to see the multiple penalty count. It feels like we often give away a soft penalty in their half and then compound it with another immediately.

This is the fascinating aspect of that sort of paper-based analysis. Generally, I think this is where overall squad development comes in. I would argue that there appears to be a 'rising tide', but that is susceptible to the vagaries of individual performance standards.

Like any improvement pattern, there will be spot data points that regress, but the overall trend is upwards. With 15 players on the pitch, some will operate below their potential, others above. Those with the most ability on paper will perform better than those with less ability more often than not. If Player A tops out at a skill level of 7 (notwithstanding the hopelessness of trying to numerically nail such an ephemeral concept), but is in a rich vein of form, he will perform better on average during that period than Player B, a 10/10 but who is unfortunately on a lengthy rough trot - low confidence and the 'yips'.

With each individual calculation spread across a squad, each at their own individual position on that X, Y axis, you'll get that.

And that's what makes it so fascinating - working out who are the 10/10s,working out the form of your sub 10/10s, and putting it together week by week to make a matchday squad. That's the coach's big bucks, I suppose.

It's been a while, but reading that back I think I may actually have just badly rewritten the premise of 'Moneyball', and probably contributed knack all that's original to the conversation. Damn. Forgive me, am a relative newbie to posting (long time lurker, etc...!) smiling smiley
