I think this will be a very tough challenge. Their props truck it up well, they have 2 solid hookers who carry too (a dream), locks who carry well and who will disrupt our lineout, combative backrow, experienced backs... plus it's at Kingston park.
My hope is we don't kick aimlessly, we front up and try to force mistakes (Luther passing into the stands etc). However, I am not hopeful.
Positive - good to see Tei back and Freeman on the bench.

Two pretty out of sorts teams at the minute hard to call this one, I can see this being a close low scoring dull match but if either team can find some form they could well win by a comfortable margin.

Last time Joel Hodgson started at 10 against us at Franklins he has a stormer and we were well and truly beaten. Luther at 12 and Brown at 15, will see some fairly direct running into our midfield.
But great to see T Harrison, let's hope he is back to his rampaging best and for me having T Freeman on the bench after injuty lifts spirits, definitely someone who adds a lot
We need to win this game to get back into winning ways
We are above Falcons in the league, other teams have gone there and won this season
If we dont, I fear the loosing habit will be difficult to change

Good to see some returnees, hopefully fully fit and not being rushed back due to other injuries.
Once again Dingwall is 13 and Hutch 12 but someone must have some logic for that. From memory Burrell has a great defender in direct tackles but prone to being rocked on his heels and stood up. Likewise Brown is a rock solid last line of defence but not the quickest. Not sure what the forecast is but I'd guess not great so we need to make sure we front up first and foremost with a solid scrum and lineout before we look to do much more.

Whilst our perforamances this season suggests top 4 isnt going to happen, a win still keeps us in the top 4 hunt.

The tries were from really nice work, but we cannot give up possession down deep or like that at the end of the half. Have to take our opportunities better. The problem is we can get ahead but not hold it....

Looking forward to watching the replay when it’s on Prem rugby. Sounds like we are still making poor decisions and poor discipline. But will be refreshing to watch a win and hopefully a momentum changer for the season if we are lucky

Some people moaning for the sake of it. It sounded good on radio noddy. iFve tries and limiting the opposition to 1 try and 1 pen - that sounds like terrible dewfense * - and away from home to boot. WELL PLAYED SAINTS.

Living in the far north (of Norway, near Russian border) we are able to watch live matches. This is well worth a watch.. the first 20 odd mins we were so...... Saints.
When we stop giving away stupid pens we are very good... the problem we have at this moment in time is that when we play the top 4, they manage us better.
We are quite predictable in the penalties we give... and imo most are experience based. Which is why we destroy other mid table teams sometimes.
We will continually improve but we need to play the better sides as much as possible...

It wasn't pretty but a win is a win. 2 great tries in the last quarter (look out for the Furbank try @61) - the rest of it forgettable. Pretty much what we've been doing but against a poor side it's good enough. Dingwall had a good first half but got injured and didn't come out for the 2nd half - hope he's ok.

Not really when you watch it. That was a good performance.
It was a poor first 20 mins where discipline was a problem and against a better performing team that would have cost us a lot more. However, then we really stepped up physically in the pack, some fantastic performances from our back row, Ribbans and Matavesi was outstanding. We had dominance in the tackle, carrying and mostly in the breakdown. Real improvement in scrum and line out against Newcastle's areas of strength. And our backs showed how good they can be when our pack gets dominance. The tries were brilliantly taken and great to watch.
Newcastle were pretty poor but in part this reflected how physical and well organized we were in defence. And the heart and workrate in defence at the end when we'd won comfortably was great to see.

Personally I disagree but everyone will see it differently. I thought we were largely quite good to watch with great tries and physicality in defence. I think we should celebrate it when we do play well and work so hard to the 80th minute.

Happy with 5 points and a win. Expected this result as Newcastle not a great side at moment. Don't think you can read to much into it bar being a good away win. Let's see of we can get any consistency over next month.

I was at the game and that’s how I saw it. Defensively very good and some massive hits one by Dingwall resulted in turnover and a try. It looked like they read our back plays pretty well first half and we couldn’t really cut loose. They ran out of ideas as we nullified their forwards. Skosan try was a nice one with a lovely step from Matevesi and so too the James try with some nice timing of the passing. I thought they were poor but most of that was down to us I think so an easy victory which is normally an arm wrestle with little or nothing to show for it.

Was there too. Plenty of mistakes and sloppy play in the first 20. We persevered. Defence was good although against a poorer team than the last few weeks. A couple of brek always that helped us. Started to move it quickly and paid off in the second half.
Safe journey to Saintly folk especially Tom who has a 6 hour journey back to Kent and Bernie’s best friend who will be heading back to the county. Well done Saints enjoyed the fact they came around the pitch to thank us.
Fair dues to Newcastle players who also walked around and applauded the Saintly ones for travelling.

At the moment, I'm just happy with a win. And a five pointer too.
Hard to judge from Radio Noddy, although Graham is usually well balanced. A pal of mine from Tigers described us as Graham Hick style flat track bullies! Not sure if that is an insult or a complement!
But one or two players seemed to have found their mojo, so fingers crossed for harder tests to come.

There are three things that are guaranteed. The first is that when we concede a silly pen, we will concede another straight after. The second is when we beat a top four side, it will be because they are missing players. And the third is when we beat a lower team in the league the match day thread and lots of after posts will say that beating poor sides is okay but we can't beat the top 4.

That's a really good observation (imho). Hickey could batter mediocre attacks but rarely managed to succeed against the very best (with isolated exceptions).

Tigers won by 30 at home, we won by 34 away 1 week later.

I seem to remember a season a while back when we had wins against "top" sides but lost to "lower" ones.

Incredible how half empty some glasses are here at times.. 5 points away against a notoriously difficult opponent on their home patch, missing Lawes, Augustus & others.. job done and enjoy the evening. Gripe when things aren’t going well by all means but enjoy the wins especially the away ones.

I recall that was falcons first home defeat in some time? Five points a good points difference and yet so many negative posts against a team I thought we all supported.
I sometimes wonder why some posters don’t support other teams if they are so much better than us ?

If we had scraped a win i could understand the negativity but its all we could wish for to always look comfortable in a 5 point win.
The other points about top 4 teams are fair but have nothing to do with a good win.

I enjoyed watching the game on Premiership Rugby.
Matavesi's double sidestep to set up a first half try and Furbank ghosting through the midfield, reminiscent of Barry John, for the last try were my two highlights.

I am probably at bit more balanced and down the middle on this one, I am always happy when we get a five point win especially away from home, but do feel the idea we are flat track bullies is also fairly true.
Basically I am as happy when we can put 40+ past the likes of Falcons, Wuss and Bath as I am disappointed when the like of Tigers and Quins do it to us, but I also think this reflects where we are as a club as well.

Thoughts having watched the game.
The first 20ish minutes we were bad, 5 penalties against, dropping the high ball, knock ons, attempting suicide passes that put us under pressure all in all not good.
However, once we achieved a lead, 10 - 3 we seemed to relax and mentally switch on, resulting in ball sticking, being patient, building the play. Totally different team.
Just goes to show the game is as much a mental process as it is physical.
I thought Alex Mitchell had his best game sweeping, covering defence, taking high ball and marshalling the game. He is growing and must be in EJ's thoughts.
Dingwall belies his stature with some of his tackles.
T and Woody serious backrow graft to manage the breakdowns Both almost topped Lewis but not quite. However made a significant difference in providing quick ball
Let's hope that is the marker laid down, next few weeks will be a test.

I think yesterday summed up - for me at least - my frustration with all that is Saints.
Yes, they go to a notoriously difficult place to play - and win.
Yes, they go and score five tries and earn 5 points.
They played seriously intelligent rugby - ok, for at least 60 minutes!
A week after an appalling game against Saracens. A week may be a long time in politics - it seems even longer in rugby.

So many pluses compared to some of the recent performances. Ribeye starting to come into some form again. Matevesi’s audition for Strictly and Luds was beyond awesome.
I did also like Biggs taking the drop goal when nothing else was on. Keep the scoreboard ticking over and in Tom Litchfield do we have a future Scott Gibbs on our books.

I agree with Litchfield, before the season started I predicted Litchfield and Gillespie to have a mini break through season, guess 1 out of two aint bad.

Whenever I have seen Gillespie he has alway played well so good choice and usually scores/creates. Surprised not been developed more as young and English. With reduction In salary cap ticks all boxes.

I think it's about building a Strong overall squad. Sleights has struggled on his return which I guess reflects not being in squad this week. Maybe some shared game opportunities for both players. Naturally these are coaching decisions but TC has only just appeared this season so always options. Appreciate its a juggling act of opinions.

It has puzzled me why there are no A fixtures when clubs are playing U18’s The only thought I have is that clubs have reduced squads to such an extent that they can’t put out another 23 on Mondays. Surely it would be better to have the competition pin place and if teams can’t fulfil their fixture the points are awarded to the other club like is happening in Europe. If there’s a full schedule and 25% don’t take place then that means 75% of fixtures are going ahead to the benefit of the clubs that are perhaps building academies rather than relying over heavily on mercenaries?
Even thecWelsh pulled in the best of club players to fulfill European fixtures so they made things happen.

It seems a good number of clubs are playing more youngsters at the minute must be hard on all not having second string matches. Also it is easy to criticise coaches for not giving youngsters a chance but the coaches are probably in the best position to know when they are ready.

Yes I agree we can use Premiership Cup and even European games go play our youngsters but that doesn’t answer my point that there is an U18 contest but no A competition.
Arguably if there’s nothing in place guys may drift away to local clubs if there’s nothing on offer In late teens early twenties young guys want to play.

I would say that’s mostly down to injuries and necessity to use the extremities of the squad. I don’t think clubs would be blooding youngsters if they had a choice

I would agree to an extent but certainly the likes of Tigers it seems an actual choice rather than needs must. To be honest most players get their first chance at first team rugby due to injury, suspension or international call up. With the better clubs they tend to slot in easier just doing their own job within the team structure.
