Has Danny Hobbs-Awoyemi fallen into a black hole?
Also appears we're giving Dingers a week off a risking only two centres in the 23, which seems a rather brave choice.
Looking forward to Nansen getting a run out.
Given their injury woes, it's now or never to fire a shot in our European campaign for the year.

Please to see Dingwall getting a rest, he’s had a few knocks lately and has played a lot. Lichfield provided seamless cover for him when he came on last week so fully deserving a starting slot in my view. Delighted to see Nansen getting a game I was wondering where he’d got to. There are a few squad players we’ve seen little of other than the handful with Blues, are there any out playing for other clubs?
Ulster look a strong side despite their injury list, it’s hard to see past their front and back three forwards, if we can get some front foot ball we could go well but I fear we will struggle against that lot.

For info, the following are named in the Bedford Blues side to play Ampthill Connor Tupai, Danny Hobbs-Awoyemi, Jack Hughes, Karl Garside, JJ Tonks & Ollie Newman.

Jack Hughes was released by Saints at end of last season. Noticed Josh Gillespie has switched from Bedford to Ampthill in teams released.

Litchfield looks useful.
I thought Dingwall was carrying an injury, so I makes sense for a 6:2 split, as our backs are nursing a fair few injuries.
We aren't going to qualify through so looking at different match ups is a good idea.

Really looking forward to seeing how Litchfield gets on, another beaming prospect from Hopleys production line.
Also, 250 up for the GOAT 🐐. Massive moment for Saints and the big man. I don't care about this cup but hoping for a good show for the sake of the team and supporters.

God I’m old. I remember Courtney’s first appearance and I thought then that he would play for England one day. If only I was that good with lottery predictions but then they do use the funny shaped ball

I think I'm with you on that one.
Wasn't it against Esher shortly after relegation?
What a player (could do with a few more of those) !!

Spot on, Fleetg. Away to Esher - I was lucky enough to go to every away match that year, and Esher was one of my favourite memories - first met my late wife there, and it was one of the very few rugby clubhouses with an open fire!!

it is very strange this season but I find myself rather uninterested in the Euro Rugby. Not because of Saints performance, I think, because I have enjoyed the Euro Rugby in other seasons. Maybe it's the Covid thing, working massive hours (for a doc coerced back into A&E, a lot of time on my feet ). Or maybe it is just that I am really enjoying the longer than normal run of Premiership matches, despite Saints being, shall we be polite and say, wildly inconsistent.
That said, Looking forward to see Litchfield. He is going to need to cover a lot of space in the midfield defense. Also Nansen. Haven't seen him yet and he is supposed to add to our beef. Let's hope, and for good performances all around.

Yet again I ask, what has happened to Grayson? Is there a culture issue with him or something?

I know the coaches would never acknowledge the idea, but I can only assume JG is out of favour for some reason.
Why on earth not play him?
As has been argued he needs an intro to the game. Unless they're assuming that George will step up and Tommy plays at FB. Whilst that idea works, it only works if they stay fit.
And I do not want to see Tuala playing ahead of JG.

I agree about Grayson. Saints are not going to win the League or Europe this season, so give him his head and see how it goes. Can't do it with all the young'uns (that's why we need the Wanderers), but strategically and selectively.

We will be losing Dan very soon. We pay a great deal for him. He is one of the best fly halves in the land. Why wouldn’t you play him in one of the top games?

As well as JG I’d add in Danny Hobbs Ayowomi. Today is the first time I’ve seen him named at Bedford. No game time here despite putting in some really good performances during last season and never been listed among the injured so unavailable. Another forgotten man it seems.

Because JG needs the game time, if, as we assume, DB does go off with Wales. It's effectively a dead rubber now for Saints anyhow.
I also suspect DB could actually do with a rest. I don't think he's been playing particularly well.

Hearing this a few times
Dan resigned until end 2023 season same time as Courtney
He is enjoying his time at Saints and took a reduced remuneration package as did Courtney
Unless someone is buying out his contract

I said to someone I was working with today that Northampton was playing Ulster. He thought it was rather unfair that a town take on a country! (Ulster is even more than just NI). As I’ve always said, we’re the best rugby TOWN in Europe.

I make it 3 out of 23 who are new this season. I guess it may depend on what you mean by "know"

Standard European start.
Nansen isn’t exactly shining, might need to work on his fitness as he looked dead on his feet after 5 mins.
*just as Nansen splits the Ulster defence in two*

It was interesting hearing Ferguson’s frustration at us blowing a line out.
We won’t win anything consistently without a moderate level of consistency at the set piece elements of the game. We’re still in it, but it would be an identity level change at half time for us to stay in it, I think.
I just can’t see how anyone thinks this approach to the game is sustainable. Feels like playing roulette.

That line-out summed up Saints for me. Forgot the basics, fannied around - and lost the ball.
But they're not doing too bad. If they can aim at the opposition and not their own feet, we could still win this.

Sums us up perfectly and highlights what a liability Waller has become. Genuinely I don’t believe there is a team in Europe that fears playing us and must laugh at us on some occasions.
However saying that still in it.

Yep. Exactly.
We would perform so much better with a back to basics approach. It may not win trophies but we need some winning momentum now.
Like several of our other recent losses, Ulster clearly have a bit left in the tank if they really wanted to turn the screw. Some very classy play across the pitch from them, Ballycoombe (apologies unsure of the spelling) has been a joy to watch.
Their offloading game is quite exciting. Their 9 also stood out.

We are a poor team that doesn’t require any opposition to have a good game to win they just have to wait for our continuous stream of mistakes and capitalise.
I know there was a lot of praise for our result against Newcastle, with someone claiming Newcastle were a notoriously difficult team to beat, they are only a notoriously difficult team for us.
It’s got to the point where I’m just happy that whilst we have had a poor game that the scoreboard isn’t completely embarrassing. We are a team that kill ourselves and that is evident for all to see and we get the odd good game normally against a weaker side that we then think we are world beaters. And people will say we only lost by 4 but ultimately a late score when the game was gone only helps it look better than it was.

Admiral effort at the end but 80 minutes too late. I hate to say it but Skosan has not had a good few games, frequent handling basics for stuff a winger should be very strong at.

Oh dear that was awful. With Ulster missing so many I really thought we should win that.
Having a winger who given 20 yards of space and a hooker to beat decides to cut back inside and kicking the ball dead from a penalty inside the 22 sums up where we are at the minute.
We really do look clueless, so disappointing.

Enjoyed watching Ulster's off load game. We have so many shortcomings on pitch. I've no idea what the new coaching team minus Boyd are going to bring but the pressure will build.
So many unforced errors. Have to say I agree Skosan appears to have a few skills issues for an international winger.
Newcastle.are a poor team, that's why we looked ok.
Next week.at Racing is going to be a challenge and a different matter.
It's reassuring to know that club has promoted the coaching group which set out today!. Wow.

Newcastle have beaten Chiefs away and home wins against Wasps, Bristol with a draw against Wuss this season. Last season they had 6 home wins including Sale & Quins as well as us so I’d say Newcastle is a difficult place to go and get a result and no not just us that have difficulty.
So yes we are a poor side but your Newcastle reference is an insult to them and dismissive of what was a good win last week. It’s funny, every week when we lose it’s us that are poor, it’s the ref, it’s this and that, very little reference to the opposition. When we win it’s the opposition that’s poor never us that play well

Ulster reserves far too good for us. We played some decent rugby but our basics are so poor that any well organised side is going to beat us. On a weekend were Prem clubs have done well in Europe that is a very disappointing performance.

When we win it’s the opposition that’s poor never us that play well
Newcastle are not a top team in the prem that’s not an insult that is the truth. They have a 50% loss rate in the Prem they are very beatable. We were not world beaters last week and had a very poor 20 minutes, but at no point did I think Newcastle were good and we were playing a top team.
I don’t think anyone has mentioned the ref today. I think the last ref bashing was the same game in which our DoR got banned for the comments he made about the ref so would say it wasn’t an unfair position for fans to feel the same. Ulster did play well, but I agree with another poster that they never really hit top gear and could just sit back and capitalise on our mistakes and inability to put them under pressure. I think Burns and Ballaccoune had good games but I don’t think there performances were game winning if we actually provided a challenge.

We have not beaten a team this season who have won the match prior to playing us. (Exception of Gloucester who won a preseason friendly)
Are we turning Dan Biggar into an average player for saints? Or is he sadly becoming an underwhelming signing.
We really need to improve our recruitment.

To be fair that Ulster side is strong even with some absentees, some of their top players today were the newer ones. We started poorly and made life hard for ourselves time and again but still showed some dogged defence for periods and some great attacking rugby in spells - pretty much exactly where/what we are right now.
What was interesting was Rory Best was asked what you can do about errors - his answer was make sure you're training under pressure so you can execute skills and plays under pressure when it counts. I know there is a focus on reducing impact training but surely no side doesn't train under pressure these days? They also mentioned confidence which I think is key, we have purple patches when we get our tails up but then make silly mistakes and that confidence disappears.

I don't think we are a poor team, just a team with a high ceiling and a low floor. And we strive to hit each extreme in most games. We will see what happens next season. Maybe we should recruit Rory Best to help us practice???
By the way, how do you all think Nansen did? Seemed a bit off the pace at times. but at others showed glimpses he could be a handful.

This was just another carbon copy performance for me. You can pretty much tell how things are going to unfold from the first five minutes. We’re just that 5-10% off in terms of standards and intensity against the more serious teams. Some of the tackling, especially around the tries, was particularly resigned imo.
Still, we collectively shrug and move on to next week. Getting rather boring though!

We were a mixed bag today but it could so easily have been different but for a few unfortunate errors. We were two scores down early on despite having had pressure and opportunities. Even so when we did score the momentum shift was noticeable and the Ulster forwards were blowing (so were we mind). Yes there were too many unforced errors, and Ulster off-loaded well and rode their luck. We scored two well constructed tries, their scores benefitted from our errors or luck in the case of the knock-on that wasn’t for their second try. We should have done better and a one or two percent swing our way would have given us the victory. It was all fine margins stuff really IMHO!

Apologies Gordo, that wasn’t directed to people on here. More a comment on the general atmosphere of malaise around the club atm.
Even the post-match interviews and Fergie’s comments at pitch side seem relentlessly repetitive at this stage. Everyone seems to know what the problems are, but no one seems to be able to address them.

The more I reflect on the game, the more I share your views. A couple of off-side decisions given rather than ignored; A better bounce. It could have been quite different, and that is not something we have been able to say for quite some time when losing.

The acceptance(?) of the average/poor performance must stop. And this is where I expect Dowson to show us what he is made of. He must communicate to the coaching team and then the players, that repeat offenders will be in trouble.

I'm going to stick up for Waller a bit on this one, having just seen a replay of the moment on Twitter (https://twitter.com/Murray_Kinsella/status/1482780147958915073). Very easy for Waller's perception to have been: Litchfield's tackled, Ulster player goes for the ball and no Saints player contests the ball (so no ruck), so I'm good to tackle that player as soon as he's up with the ball. That tackle was made prematurely, but I'm not sure it's as dumb a moment as it first looked.

We counted 17 unforced errors today. Knock ons, dropped balls, crooked line out throw, overthrown line out, missed and over kicked penalties to touch. Saints will never compete at the highest level or against the stronger sides if this doesn’t improve.

Also, a win next week (ha! - but Covid cancellations do happen, and Racing are already guaranteed at least 5th place so might go easy....) could put us into the top 8 of the group on a whopping 6 or 7 points.
8th placed Glasgow (5 points) play 3rd placed La Rochelle.
9th placed Montpellier (also 5 points) play 5th placed Chiefs.
11th placed Bath (2 points) play 4th placed Leinster (live on Channel 4 ... could be messy)
and
12th placed Ospreys (0 points) are at 6th placed Sale.

Heh :-) On the other side of the coin we could drop to 12th, the one position that doesn't go on to any further knockout games. But I'm pretty confident that won't happen, as Bath are playing Leinster and Leinster will want the points, having had to cede one game to Covid already.

Doesn’t matter that a ruck hasn’t formed - you must arrive at the tackle from the direction of your own goal line if you intend to compete for the ball
Correct decision from the ref.

Look at it again, the ball is on the ground still - Waller binds onto the player forming a ruck but having not come from the direction of his own goal line
And even if it wasn’t on the ground tackle law says any player gaining possession of the ball following a tackle can only be tackled by someone from the direction of their own goal line
Still correct decision however you frame it

I'm not trying to say that it was the wrong decision, just that it's not as dumb a thing to have done as it might have seemed. I think Waller bodged the timing of the tackle, making it too early, but that's all.
It doesn't reflect this scenario, but how does the bit about 'any player gaining possession of the ball following a tackle can only be tackled by someone from the direction of their own goal line' work if the player gaining possession after a tackle has nobody between himself and the tryline he's trying to score over? No defender chasing him down is going to run around him before making a tackle nor be obliged to, surely?

14.9.C tackle law - just read the laws mate. You cannot stand up on the wrong side of a completed tackle and tackle the next person to pick up the ball without having come from the direction of your own goal line. There is a sense of immediacy to this law of course generally applied by referees but the Waller engagement couldn’t have been anymore immediate!

So first try of the match directly traceable back to Alex hinging 7 points. 4th try directly attributable to Rory flying out of the line and missing the tackle creating a dogs leg. 7 points
These 2 issues are groundhog day moments. Time and time again but no one seems to learn.

Set piece fails at regular intervals , unforced handling errors, poor decision making and lots of penalties given away.
Those four things are regular failings and will always cost matches.

Admiral effort at the end but 80 minutes too late. I hate to say it but Skosan has not had a good few games, frequent handling basics for stuff a winger should be very strong at.
That’s like Captain Edward Smith complaining that the band was out of tune as his ship sunk. So much going wrong way before the ball gets to the wingers.
We play such a frantic game. It’s one thing to try offloading etc from anywhere on the pitch but where’s the structure? Where’s the tactics? Where’s the possession or the field position? Instead we try and play this high speed game where we are only seconds away from yet another dropped pass or knock on.

Sums it up well. I have nothing against high risk rugby, very much for it, but, there are times when you don't play it and need composure and possession. It seems that this is nowhere in the game plan.

If we cannot break the defensive line after 5 phases we just seem to sling it about and hope for the best.
Eurgh we keep saying the same things week after week.

Absolutely this. Unforced knock ons, missed tackles, losing the high ball to Lowry when surrounded by much taller saints players, missed kicks for touch at crucial points. If these were isolated events to today you could accept it, but it's happened regularly for years. We beat ourselves.

They were more than 4 points better than us, but it was good that we stayed in the fight when we shouldn't have been able.
We point a lot to our errors, but they also butchered opportunities.
We were working very hard to get the ball to the wide channels making it pretty hard work for ourselves, resulting in slow breakdowns, and just allowing them to drift the defence out to meet us, conversely, they when wide when they had created the space and looked much more dangerous when they did.
We needed a bit more direct running to crack the nut (imo) giving the space to the outside.
Hutch needs to get better a choosing his moment to fly out for the big hit, he keeps trying it, and it leaves us exposed.
Its probably indicative of him trying to work on his defence to prove he can.

Let's not forget we had a European debutant in the midfield, I thought he looked pretty good but that understanding and connection won't be there (not that there is anyway with our various midfield combos).
Although we shouldn't be happy with being close, gallant runners up etc - what I did like was both the will and speed of thought following Hutch's late try. That earned a losing bonus point so the easy thing to do was take the allotted time for the conversion and end the game with a point. However as we had a chance to win they went for that - sadly again execution let us down, I think as a result of trying to rush again.

Good shout, LeicesterSaint - we're quick to criticise when the top 2" doesn't get used, so let's be happy where we do see it!
Compare with the end of Wasps vs Toulouse if you like - Wasps kick a penalty when they could not possibly lose the game rather than kick for touch and aim for a fourth try, and Toulouse subsequently chase for a try (which they did get), risking injuries etc., when they couldn't even get a losing bonus point from it.

The club pump out all this media positivity but the teams performance for a long time reflects the reality. Under Boyd we are rarely competitive or win meaningful games. That's his legacy. Lots of teams bring through young players and many of ours are no longer young after 3 or 4 years in first team..
.
The coaches continue to say we need to learn fast and its frustrating etc. THe coaches have been in charge for 4 years... it going to take something extraordinary for the present coaching team to make the changes required to raise us above a mid table team and maybe no budget to do so.. Start with a front row clear out..
Other prem clubs done well in Europe this weekend.
Good luck to them and be interesting to observe performance without Boyd.

Would be good if the new coaches helped us out with a theory or plan, and it can't be a four year plan been through that too many times.
Also agree with Rugbyman 01, the young player excuse has worn very thin and is probably irrelevant anyway.

Admirable*, but thanks for the seafaring jokes.
I more mean his apparent weakness under the high ball, repeatedly dropping balls passed to him, stuff like that. If we're going to play this kind of game, you need the fine touch skills to execute. It simply will not work otherwise.
This old article with quotes from the legend that is Ben Ryan is exactly what is going wrong when trying to play this sort of game:

Ben Ryan is totally correct. I think that is some of the problem Chris Boyd has had here, that the skill levels are so far below the standard he is used to working with back in New Zealand.
The message has been instilled in the side that if it is on, then make the decision and go for it and if it fails then that is because it isn't really on or the skills weren't good enough. I think the side think it is on every time they get the ball and invariably the skill levels aren't good enough to make the most of the opportunity (if it is really there). The result is often a scrum from a knock on, fumble or dropped pass and then that's when the big heavy packs make mincemeat of our front row.
Watching the Saints when it clicks is beautiful rugby. Look at the game when Matt Proctor made his debut... slick length of the field bursts, sublime handling and wave after wave of attack. Unfortunately when it just isn't quite firing on all cylinders, it becomes an accident waiting to happen.
The message has been instilled in the side that if it is on, then make the decision and go for it and if it fails then that is because it isn't really on or the skills weren't good enough. When Boyd first arrived l remember him commenting that he was surprised how poor our basic skills were and l don't think they have improved much based on how often we drop the ball.

Without causing more upset
I have said for many years that the skill set of the players produced by our academy is woefully short of the demands of professional rugby
Defence is optional Harry as well as existing crop have struggled defensively
Game plan, just managing a game rather than acting like Duracell bunnies for 80 minutes
Patience, structured game play
Building scores,
Basic skills, why was Boyd so shocked by the lack of skills!!
Anyone who witnessed the present group development through A games can’t be surprised with how we play
I think it’s great that we develop our own
But the present structure needs more focus on basics
The end result isn’t there yet

So many of your above points would fade into the background if we could only fix our set piece and take the pressure of the backs. Non of our 4/5 usual props are playing well and I’d say all are showing far less promise or potential compared to when they first broke through.
Only Matevesi has shown any improvement since he joined us and is the only front rower I’d consider to be Premiership standard.
Does anyone remember Ehren’s first scrum against Tigers. I thought we had a force to be reckoned there but he’s hardly been seen since

I don't disagree with any of that Dragonboy but against Ulster I thought the forward battle was pretty close to parity. It was the Backs were I was disappointed. We had a Lion, a Springbok, 2 England internationals, a Scottish international and an England U20 and came off 2nd best to a back line with an average age of 22.8 - what's going on?

We certainly came off second best on the score board but I think Ulster were fortunate with the odd bounce, knock-on and fumble. Our backs created two good tries and I thought they played pretty well. We did struggle with kicks and high balls but I think I’d like to see better quality phase ball to work with.

We clearly watched a different game Hector! If I were to pick a best 15 from those that played Ulster would have at least 6 of the back line - I think you could build a strong case for Hutchinson although his defence continues to be woeful.

I think its always tricky to assess an individual's defence as opposed to the whole - its very easy for a player to look like its their fault when in fact its much more to do with the players around them. I thought Hutch had a pretty decent game defensively but the overall alignment wasn't right at times.

Personally I thought if anyone was lucky it was us, our first try looked clearly forward I would have been very annoyed had it not at least been reviewed had it been against us. Our second try was with about 40 seconds left on the clock, not a great return for a back line playing pretty well at home against a side missing so many IMO.
