Not considered for selection means that the player can’t be selected. So either injured and unable to play or suspended.

Quite interesting that Bath don't list the injured players or those on international duty. Will have to keep an eye out on other clubs to see what they do.

So its more like 'Not available for selection'? Not considered, for me, would be the players that are available but not selected, ie. Hinkley

It is strange terminology I suppose - surely all first team players who aren't injured or away on international are 'considered' for selection every week? Hinckley is a strange one - he's played a fair amount but not every minute of every game so he'd need a rest week. Perhaps illness or something personal but surely that would then put him on the aforementioned list?
Matevesi is a pretty strong option to cover flanker but surely not ahead of an out and out flanker who has been in good form?

Good form? He was absolutely dreadful in his 2 cameos against Glaws and Bears.
My guess - He was considered and then dropped and replaced by a hooker. Wouldn't be surprised if we don't see him again. A shadow of the player we saw at the end of last season.

Thankfully didn’t see the Bristol debacle but, that seems a harsh analysis of Hinckley and I hope we see him many times over the forthcoming seasons

He's got the wrong side of some decisions at the end of games. He's trying too hard in the few minutes he's got on the field. It looks a sensible move to make, but he has much to offer in the future.

It is what it is though, got physically battered by Leicester (fairly) last week to add to our injury woes. It's going to be difficult, I like the look of your backs so fear my trip to the Gardens tomorrow is going to be a hard watch. Wishing now that I had bought a ticket for the England under 20 match at the Rec tomorrow ! Still, always enjoy a visit to the Gardens despite having to pay for a hotel as no late train. An annoying consequence of Friday night games for away fans.

In fairness TWS isn’t doing any policing, he’s pointing something out, an observation. I also agree with what was said in a thread about a new signing yet again being turned into ‘why haven’t we signed a prop’, until the point we sign a prop, then it will be ‘why did we sign the wrong prop’

I would've thought his form at the end of last season could've resulted in a 2-3 year contract, so I'd be surprised if it's only a 1-year deal. Guess we'll find out when the INs and OUTs are known in a few months. Sometimes players get knocks/dead legs in training - if they're 50/50, they could be rested and not classified as injured. He's had relatively few opportunities this season but hasn't been bad prior to the last couple of games. I was disappointed in his appearance against Glaws - 2 penalties inside 90s gave them field position for their final try. Even if that (and the Bristol match, not that anyone came away from that with credit!) were a factor in him being 'dropped', I'd be surprised if he's out of contract and won't feature again.

I thought the Hinkley decision was odd on first reading but can kind of see the thinking. Matavasi is in need of game time and covers back row, we're already missing a few bodies in that area with Lawes, Coles and Wilkins already injured so kind of means we've got a Flanker spare in case of one ASY, Graham, Trokkie or Ludlam go down this injured for Saints or England.

Sometimes it isn't the point but the way it is made - it comes across as incredibly callous when we opine about players being dropped/binned/let go after a bad/indifferent game or two. Doesn't mean you can't post it but don't be surprised when others get a little protective of players. In Hinckley's case he's still relatively young, still settling in and in a position where he's expected to make a difference defensively which is very difficult when you're getting knocked backwards all the time. For all the plaudits the jackallers get they can only do so because their team mates are giving them that opportunity - for England currently see Ludlam doing loads of graft and chop tackles so others can get over the ball.

It's a forum to exchange views and thoughts. We all have different styles of communicating. As long as contributions don't break the rules we should accept this. I might find your style dull and uninteresting but I wouldn't point that out and I wouldn't try to deny you a voice.

On paper we should win. But then on paper we shouldn’t ship 62 points to Bristol.
Hopefully the good Saints show up. Which we tend to do more when we play at home.

My view is that Hinkley has all the potential to be a wonderful player. I think he's just having an off period and will be back in the side soon.
The problem with coming off the bench is that there is the tendancy to make an impression is a limited amount of time. As we've seen a number of times, trying too hard can almost be as bad as no trying hard enough.
He'll be back and we'll be glad of him.

Great to see Ramm, Freeman, Proctor and Augustus back - should give us more defensive and aerial solidity and strength and danger in attack. (Not downplaying Hutch though has been so much better in defence this year).
Fingers crossed Smith and Grayson will push each other on in some key games.

The 5/10 minute at the end of a game shouldn’t be the measurement of him

When he joined us at the back end of last season, we had some incredible games, like the one against Quins where we were in a great run of form in some huge games. He was so good that his game against he pretty much earned his contract then and there.
I think its a little unfair to base Hinkley's ability on the appalling team display against Bears and the last 15 minutes of the Gloucester game where we'd pretty much switched off. Put him in a game where the rest of the team plays well and I think you'll see a completely different player.

Not just because he scored, but Robbie Smith seems to be improving game on game. Looked a bit shaky when he first came but probably think he's our first choice hooker when all fit now. Carries well.

Agree our defence is easy to play against. Phase rugby will succeed, don't need anything flash, just put together a good 6 or 7 phases and opposition will get joy. Albeit we got the pen, that last scrum worried me

Robbie smith is very good, and strong darts compared to last week. Augustus makes such a difference and Ramm immense under high ball.
Certainly not a classic so far and feels like we are playing in baths hands a little bit, need some more territory and put some phases together and there should be a few more tries out there for us

Much deserved MoM for Smith.
Still shipping a shed load of points and so many questions over the defence.
You can only play what’s in front of you but will be tougher tests ahead.

Good enough win for the 5 points. Ah defence defence defence, we know it’s an issue but right now not able to resolve that one. Great to see Robbie Smith take MotM, looking like somebody on the up. Another solid game from Collins also.

Good win, tougher challenges ahead. For once, one of my earlier posts ages well, Robbie Smith on an upward curve now settled, juarno very good other than one knock on. Nice to hear Dowson not entirely happy with defence and highlighted maul defence, hopefully let's see some of that rectified next week which will have a huge bearing on where we finish.

There were some blokes in d terrace sing the “oh Jonny bairstow” song but with it “oh Tommy freemo” I think. More new songs please, I’ve been racking my brain for months but afraid I’m not gifted in the music department. We need more new songs, lift the place up shake it about! I make pizza and will happily bring one for the best new song at the end of season game?

Very pleased with that second half albeit against a pretty poor Bath outfit. As noted elsewhere, defence seemed OK excepting being unable to stop their maul. Given that we know we can't stop a driving maul from 5m out, would it be so ridiculous for us to attack the lineout rather than trying to stop something we can't? Scored six tries and probably left at least half as many again out there, one of which in the first few seconds.
Slightly disappointed we didn't play for another score at the end - I have a nasty feeling our points difference will cost us a league position in the final reckoning. Though perhaps it's irretrievably bad compared to our competitors for the playoffs with the small number of games remaining.

6 try win. We’ve got a hooker who can hit his jumpers. Some lovely creation and use of space. So some positives.

C block on decent form tonight and singing sounded pretty good with less clapping along to wendy due to the cold (please don't clap if you're not going to also sing, you just compete with those of us who actually bother to sing and muffle the singing). Also agree with Harpole - be good to hear some more songs, surely Rambo, Freemo and TC could be a good subject!
On the rugby, 2nd half was much better than the first. Thought Fin had a great game today, really impressive kicking and some good hits in defence. Again there is plenty to work on (poor maul defence in particular) but another step closer to a semi. Congrats also to Dingers, Freemo, and TC on the milestones. COYS

A word on Alex Moon - immense. The “now or never” brigade had marked his card and I think he showed a brilliant all round game last night. Powerful carries, solid tackles and got on the end of Smith’s darts well. Ribbans will leave a hole but we’ll be ok. Lukhan - excellent as always. Let’s hope Temo can push competition next season.

Not a great game but a win nevertheless, albeit against a very poor side.
Augustus makes a huge difference when he plays. Lineout looks more reliable when Robbie Smith plays and his all round game is good - now 1st choice for me.
Fin Smith is going to develop into a top top player who will be away with England a lot. But with Furbank/Grayson as back up I think we’re in good shape at 10.
So much still to work on for Dowson/Vesty - need to sort maul defence before we play LI.

All getting a bit tetchy isn’t it!.. due to my BT Sport boycott only had the pleasure of ‘you know’ Lennie and Graham on BBC, didn’t sound a great game generally and we made hard work of what should have been an easier win. Big plus for me and something that’s not been right for a long time is we finally converted some 5M attacking lineouts. Hopefully a sign of more consistency in that area, makes a big difference to our game if we can maul as it also opens other attacking moves off the line out as per Juarno try. Lots still to improve elsewhere though

But yet we managed to score four tries through the forwards ourselves included five metre mauls, surely if it is just a size issue that wouldn't be possible?
It is extremely difficult to defend a five metre maul when it is done well. We might not be the best and there is certainly room for improvement however no reason at all that improvement is not possible with the current squad. Pretty much like every other part of our defence.

Read the thread. It's not about opinions - it's about posters trying to close down other posters when they don't like what is being said. That's exactly what twsaint was doing - the inference was that my post was unacceptable on here - fine with that if it broke the rules - but it didn't even come close to breaking the rules. We then had LS opining that my comments were callous - that's a strong statement so don't be surprised when I respond in kind. I then closed the issue down last night only for stjj to reopen it this morning - in what way was that post relevant to last night's game which is what this thread is supposed to be about? I didn't start any of this - I made a relatively innocuous post about one of our players that seems to have a prompted a reaction from some of our more sensitive posters.

I thought Alex Moon had one of his best games for us. He really has moved forward this season. Good for him.

We could not challenge the Bath rolling maul effectively and yet we only tried to sack it once - and got penalised, but at least we tried - and did not compete on the jump at all.

I'm pretty sure there was another occasion where we successfully sacked it, ref called it a a tackle.
I do wonder if the Bath coaching team saw their greatest chance of gaining anything from this match as the maul and therfore had spent all week focusing on it.
Also, perhaps one for Super-Stat St Ted, it might be interesting to study the success rate of mauls (both sides of the ball) to see how "easy" They are to defend legally. My gut feel is that if it's set halfway decently the team in possession will make very good yardage

That was shortly before half time, and I suspect that the logic was , bank the three and go in in the lead, rather than possibly fail in the lineout, and give Bath the morale boost from successfully keeping us out, and thus going in on a high.
For what it’s worth, which is little, the unanimous call from our area of the stands was to take the three.

We have a success rate of 92% with our mauls, opposition comes in at 91% so we’re out mauling the opposition by the smallest of margins.

Coaches have taken a bashing of late but you have to give them credit for the application and attitude last night
Million miles away from last week
But again that is what we should be seeing not some of the limp performances we have witnessed
Now just need to build on it and move forward
One worry
There where a lot of empty seats

I think that it was a Friday night and the weather had been terribad all day, also playing a bottom team. That is the optimum conditions for empty seats.

Indeed, we Bath fans do travel in numbers to away games but Friday ones really are a challenge. I decided against driving up and back the same day and chose to stay in hotel so an added cost. These days I prefer the train but impossible to get back from Northampton after the game.

Not assured by any means but you would hope in this day and age and being at an elite level club he’s getting expert advice on recurring injuries, long term welfare and risk assessed as to whether to continue playing
