Britain will be strongly represented with Tim Henman and Greg Rusedski also confirmed entrants, but it is Hewitt who will be aiming to join John McEnroe (1979-1981) as the only players to win three consecutive Stella Artois crowns.

"As soon as I pick up my racquet and get on the grass at the Stella I feel match tough," he said. "I made the semis in 1999, and the next two years I won the title.

"In my opinion they are the best grass courts in the world - the bounce is true and the ball really comes onto your racquet."

Meanwhile, Henman, twice a runner-up at the event, is determined to win a title on grass.

He said: "With the likes of Hewitt and Rusedski, there will be a lot of guys capable of playing good tennis on grass. I've been to the final twice and I'll be looking to go one better this year."

Pete Sampras and Juan Carlos Ferrero could also feature in the field after requesting wild-card places to be reserved for them.

Marat Safin, Jan-Michael Gambill, James Blake, Mark Philippoussis, Wayne Ferreira and Swede Thomas Enqvist are also competing.
