Roberts Clinches Dream Team Left Back Berth

The poll to find the latest member of the Total Tranmere Rovers Dream Team, for the position of left back, was won by Rovers’ current left back Gareth Roberts. Roberts polled a massive 88% of the 32 votes cast which is the biggest winning margin in the Dream Team polls so far.

Gareth Roberts becomes the first current Tranmere player to take his place in the Total Tranmere Rovers Dream Team at the position of left back.  He joins Manager Johnny King, Goalkeeper Eric Nixon and Right Back Steve Yates.  Robbo is also the first International Player to be selected to the Dream Team.

 

Born and bred just over the border in North Wales not far from Wrexham, 27 year old Roberts initially joined Liverpool as a 16 year old trainee.  He was released at the end of the 1998/99 season and in the August of that year joined up with Greek club Panionios where he played in the Quarter Final of the European Cup winners cup against Lazio.

 

He joined Tranmere in the November of 1999, initially on a two month trial but his good form during that two month spell was enough to convince manager John Aldridge that he was worth signing permanently.  He has since become an almost permanent fixture in the Rovers side over the past four years and has been involved in many memorable matches for the Whites.

 

The one that Roberts himself will probably remember the most was the 2000 visit to Wembley in the Worthington Cup final where we were of course defeated by Leicester City.  Robert’s though has also been involved in other memorable games including as a late substitute in that infamous Southampton 4-3 comeback game against his former club Liverpool in the 2001 FA Cup fifth round game at Prenton Park.

 

Roberts is a firm favourite with most Rovers fans as this poll shows and he has also been capped 7 times for his Welsh homeland to date.  His place in the Rovers Dream Team is more than justified but who will he be joined by next?
