McGreal Completes Dream Team Defensive Line Up

At one point the vote looked to be heading for a draw as John McGreal and Dave Challinor battled it out to take the final place in the Total Tranmere Rovers Dream Team Defence but in the end, one late vote in favour of McGreal clinched his place in the defensive line up by just 3%.

Birkenhead born defender McGreal, still plying his trade in professional football at Championship side Burnley, began his career at Tranmere after coming through the youth ranks at Prenton Park. He signed as professional in the summer of 1990 and went on to become a regular fixture in the Rovers defence for almost a decade.
Playing his part in Rovers success in the 90’s including three times reaching the First Division Play-Offs between 1993 and 1995 McGreal is rightly seen as one of the best defenders Tranmere have produced through their youth system and deservedly takes his place in the Dream Team defence alongside Clint Hill.
Sadly, at the end of the 1998-99 season, McGreal moved on to pastures new when he signed for Ipswich Town for £650,000 where he was again a good servant, spending five seasons at Portman Road before moving to Burnley at the start of this season. Although he only scored once for Rovers, it was his defence qualities that earned him the reputation of being a solid and determined player in his 228 appearances for Rovers.
