Well, it had to happen sometime, and Henry Hall's dream start to his tenure as Mo coach ended with a defeat to the league's current number two team.
Montrose were without Kerrigan (flu) and Gibson (suspended)and the settled look of the team was disrupted as they were replaced by Black and Farnan.
Stranraer took the lead through Finlayson in 29 minutes and the Mo went in 1 down at half-time.
Smart had a chance to pull Montrose level on the hour but the keeper saved the spot kick and he blasted the rebound over.
Stranraer secured all the points after 77 minutes through debutant Crawford.
Montrose remain a point ahead of Queen's Park in sixth spot in the league, whilst Stranraer remain in second behind Stirling who were surprisingly beaten at home by the Mo's next opponents Gretna.
