Ex Baggie Phillips gets Blues off to head start

Now Ex Baggie Kevin Phillips has already given his old boss Tony Mowbray food for thought this afternoon by netting a dramatic 93rd minute winner for Birmingham City in their first Championship game against Sheffield United. Just four weeks after leaving the Hawthorns, Phillips has notched up hero status at St Andrews.

Phillips, whose preferred choice had always been to stay at Albion subject to contract negotiations, completed a move to Birmingham City during the early weeks of July after turning down Jeremy Peace's offer of a 12 Month contract with an additional year should he make 19 appearances for Albion in the Premiership including substitute appearances.

But Phillips who had always clearly stated he wanted a straight two year deal, opted for the 5 mile move up the road to relegated Birmingham City.

Fans at the Hawthorns remained torn on whether offering Phillips a two year deal to play Premiership football for Albion was the right decision or not, a concern which the board at West Brom also aired given Phillip's injury history.

But Phillips will have given fans and the board alike at the Hawthorns today a little food for thought when he netted a dramatic 93rd minute winner for the Blues in their first game since returning to the Championship this afternoon at St Andrews.

In a fairly evenly matched game between Birmingham City and Sheffield United Phillips did what he does best in the 3rd minute of added time when he snuck in behind the Blades defence to slot the ball home from a 12 yard right footed effort.

Blues collected the points, and Phillips won himself an immediate place in the hearts of City fans.
