Mowbray insists final curtain is far from closing

Some might say that a point against Bolton Wanderers this weekend has all but sealed the Baggies fate for a drop back to the Championship. True – a point from what was labelled yet another ‘target game’, a ‘must win’ fixture against a beatable Gary Megson side, doesn’t look to have achieved anything. In fact it leaves Albion firmly rooted to the bottom of the table seven points adrift.
But it will take more than that to beat a defiant Tony Mowbray, who insisted that whilst his sides current positioning looked less than promising, the battle would not be over until maths made it an absolute certainty.
Some might say that those Albion players who slumped to the ground at the final whistle on Saturday have already given up the ghost. But the gaffer insists this is far from true, and that his players were simply showing their frustrations at not having secured a league win in the last 10 games after what he called a spirited performance.
The frustration is understandable. With eight games left single points are far from what the Baggies need right now. The spirited performance on the other hand fell far short of many supporters expectations. A lively opening 15 minutes was followed by slow and desperate spells from Albion, who never really fully awakened again until the bizarre tactical substitutions with 15 minutes left to play.
Both Tony Mowbray and Scott Carson have made noises to the press that ‘the great escape’ begins now. Mowbray highlights that five wins out of the remaining eight fixtures would elevate his side to 39 points. A total he believes may just be enough to survive the drop. But logic tells us that West Brom have only notched up six victories in the thirty games they have played so far. The fat lady may be far from singing, but she’s certainly warming up.
