West Bromwich Albion are today awaiting news on leading scorer Shane Long, who could miss Monday's televised clash with Southampton if he fails to win his fitness battle following a clash during Sunday's 2-1 defeat to Newcastle United.
Long suffered a kick to the back of the knee which left him nursing a sore hamstring after Albion's 2-1 Premier League defeat last Sunday.
West Brom have not ruled Long out of Monday's game with Southampton, and are currently awaiting results from a scan. But Long has already been left out of Giovanni Trapattoni's Ireland squad ahead of their friendly with Greece on November 14th, suggesting that Long is unlikely to win his fitness battle in time.
The loss of Long would come as a blow to West Bromwich Albion; he is this seasons leading goal scorer with five goals. But the gap would leave opportunity for on loan Chelsea teenager Romelu Lakaku - who started ahead of Long during last weekend's clash with Newcastle United.
