Wickets tumble in Bristol

Graeme Welch posted his best bowling performance of the season as Derbyshire kept their Frizzell County Championship promotion hopes alive at Bristol. The medium-pacer took six for 60 as the visitors bowled out Gloucestershire for 192 on a day when 16 wickets fell.
| Derbyshire slumped to 153 for six in their first innings - a deficit of 39 runs with four wickets intact. The ECB's pitch inspector will no doubt be taking an interest, but the dismissals were more to do with movement of the ball and poor shot selection than any defects in the wicket. Derbyshire slumped to 40 for three in the space of just 11 overs and failed to recover before the close of play. Steve Selwood looked in good touch on the way to making 37. He struck seven boundaries before Mike Smith returned to take his third wicket of the day by trapping him in front of his stumps. Luke Sutton dug in to finish the day unbeaten on 24, and will look to steer his side into a first-innings lead that could prove crucial in a low-scoring game. Gloucestershire's Tim Hancock and Craig Spearman shared in an opening stand worth 93. But Hancock's departure for 54 began a clatter of wickets that saw nine more batsmen depart for the addition of just 99 runs. Welch was the tormentor-in-chief, as his lively medium-pace proved too much on a wicket offering him enough movement to make batting a difficult proposition. Kevin Dean weighed in with three wickets himself to become Division Two's leading wicket-taker and ensure Derbyshire recorded maximum bowling points to help their promotion push.
