Wood and White set up Yorkshire win

White, who scored 93 and 71 against Leicestershire and Durham respectively earlier in the week, maintained his magnificent form with a sparkling 77 from 79 balls with 11 fours as Yorkshire made 288 for six.

Derbyshire doomed

The hosts were then dismissed for 157 in 37.3 overs with Chris Silverwood taking three for 23 and victory almost certainly guarantees Yorkshire a place in the quarter-finals but Derbyshire look doomed after failing to record any wins in the North Division.

After a cautious start, all-rounder White collected 11 off the sixth over bowled by Kevin Dean and he launched the ball to the boundary on three occasions in the 12th over with Tom Lungley the bowler to suffer. White, driving and cutting the ball with aplomb, was a delight to watch and Wood soon found his range as the scoreboard ticked over at an alarming rate for Dominic Cork's side.

The breakthrough finally came with the final ball of the 26th over, White clean bowled by Steven Selwood attempting a sweep shot. Michael Vaughan, making his first appearance of the season, then came to the crease and he made a pleasant 27 before being caught at deep midwicket by Dominic Hewson off the bowling of Graeme Welch.

Wood century before retiring

Wood's century arrived at the end of the 43rd over, the 25-year-old taking 127 balls to reach three figures with nine fours. Skipper Darren Lehmann was comprehensively bowled by Ali to make it 244 for three and Anthony McGrath followed shortly after when he was trapped lbw for one.

Wood was then forced to retire, bringing Richard Blakey to the crease to join Gary Fellows but a mix-up between the two led to the dismissal of Blakey who was run out for four. Chris Silverwood then holed out for one as Yorkshire went in search of quick runs in the closing stages of their innings.

Cork was the pick of the bowlers, conceding just 23 from his eight overs, but Ali went for 54 from seven erratic overs.

Derbyshire's terrible start

Derbyshire got off to a terrible start, Stephen Stubbings caught at first slip by White off the first ball of the innings bowled by Silverwood. Christopher Bassano did not last long either as he was clean bowled by Silverwood for eight with the score on 13, and the England paceman snared his third victim when Hewson was bowled for nine.

Overseas player Michael Di Venuto was next to go for 16, Matthew Hoggard claiming the wicket in his first start of the new campaign with wicketkeeper Blakey taking the catch. The hosts briefly put up some resistance, Selwood and Cork adding 46 for the fifth wicket before Cork was bowled by 17-year-old Tim Bresnan for a bustling 19.

Selwood hit a gutsy half-century but he lost another partner when Lungley was run out for 17 and he finally succumbed himself when he was caught by Fellows off the bowling of off-spinner Richard Dawson for 62 to leave Derbyshire on 142 for seven. Welch was tamely caught and bowled by Dawson for one as the feeble batting display by Derbyshire continued and three balls later, Ali was stumped off Dawson for a duck.

Dean was lbw for one to end the contest with Dawson taking four for 13, and Yorkshire batsman Wood received a double boost when he was rewarded for his glorious ton with the Gold Award and also got the all-clear from doctors after being struck on the head to bring his knock to a premature end.
