Glamorgan devastated by Dean

The Welsh side collapsed to 200 all out in their second innings, a lead of just three, and the home side took just 11 balls to knock off the winning runs, although Steve Stubbings was removed for a first-ball duck.

The Glamorgan batsmen never got to grips with a Derbyshire side which continued their superb start to the season with a combination of explosive pace bowling and agility in the field. Resuming the day on 22 for two in reply to Derbyshire's first innings total of 354, Glamorgan crumbled to 157 all out in the face of an inspired spell of pace bowling from Kevin Dean.

The left-armer finished with figures of seven for 42 as he took seven of the eight first-innings wickets to fall on day two. He then added three more in the second innings to take 10 wickets in the match as the home attack ripped through the Glamorgan top order again.

David Hemp had added 18 to his overnight total when Dean found the outside edge to get the ball rolling, Michael Di Venuto holding on to a tricky catch at second slip. He then produced a real belter three balls later to remove Adrian Dale for a third-ball duck which left the visitors reeling on 44 for four.

Things rapidly got worse though as the Glamorgan batsmen struggled to establish themselves. Jonathan Hughes made just five before Dean trapped him leg before with a delivery which beat the batsman as he looked to flick to the leg-side. Michael Powell looked to dig in, his 17 runs coming off 87 balls, but when he lazily edged an attempted drive off Mohammad Ali to Graeme Welch at third slip his side were in real trouble at 91 for six.

Mark Wallace and Robert Croft repaired some of the damage, their 59-run partnership for the seventh wicket being Glamorgan's best of the innings by far, but Wallace's dismissal for 21 was to be the first of three wickets for Dean in the space of four balls.

Wallace edged to Dominic Cork at first slip, before Darren Thomas was bowled off the inside edge to his second ball. That brought Mike Kasprowicz to the crease, but he barely had time to take his guard before he was given out leg before to a beauty from Dean.

Dean was on for the third hat-trick of his career but Croft kept him out for three more balls before becoming his seventh victim of the day as Lian Wharton held on to his lofted drive at long-on. Dean could have been excused for thinking that things could not get better, but he quickly took his wicket count for the day to nine as he took the first two wickets of Glamorgan's second innings follow-on.

Hemp made seven before Dean beat him for pace to bowl him through the gate, and Ian Thomas made it a game to forget as he bagged a pair when Andrew Gait caught his flick off the pads at mid-wicket. Thomas was removed for a first-innings duck last night and his two innings lasted only 10 runless balls.

The visitors were getting themselves into more and more trouble in the face of a buoyant Derbyshire attack. James played the captain's role, obviously hoping to see off Dean and Cork before looking to score runs from the change bowlers. He achieved the first objective, moving to 26 as Cork fired short-balls at him, but then undid all his good work by falling leg before to Welch's first ball of the innings.

Powell decided defence was the best form of attack, smashing Welch through the off-side for two boundaries in three balls, but his resistance ended when Wharton snapped up a leading edge at deep mid-on.

Welch's medium pace was causing problems and he removed Hughes leg before to leave Glamorgan in an almost impossible position at 85 for five. Dale was untroubled in making 40 before edging Dominic Cork to wicketkeeper Karl Krikken late in the day. Cork still had time to strike twice more though, removing Wallace for 34 and Thomas for one.

It looked like Derbyshire would need an extra day to achieve their inevitable victory but the visitors lost their last two wickets in the space of 10 balls as their heads began to drop. Dean returned to have Croft caught by Di Venuto at second slip and Cork took the 18th wicket of the day when Kasprowicz's slog was caught by Stubbings in the gully.
