Derbyshire Premier League match reports - 15/06/02

Sandiacre Town 174-4 beat Ockbrook 173 by 6 wickets

This result could have an important effect on the final table and represents a major victory for Sandiacre.Dave Wood was the only Ockbrook batsman to measure up to the challenge. He made 40 but for once Ockbrook’s strong batting line up failed to function. For Sandiacre Irfan ul Haq took 3-34 and when they went in to bat they were disadvantaged by the absence of the Attwood brothers who had to leave at the last moment when their father was rushed to hospital. However, they were not missed because skipper John Trueman (83 not out) and Naeem Akhter (57) rose to the occasion and they took their side to a comfortable victory.

Ilkeston Rutland 192-9 lost to Denby 193-8 by 2 wickets

What a wonderful game this was! Ilkeston batted first and posted a very challenging score under the conditions. They benefited from another good opening stand by Matt Cassar and David Smit. They put on 115 for the first wicket in good time, with Cassar making 45 and Smit 55, both out to young Ben Perry-Taylor. The score was boosted by Martin Green (33) and skipper Martin Brandrick (45). A formidable total looked in prospect at this stage, but wickets began to fall when Steve Bullock was introduced into the attack. From 173-4 five wickets fell whilst 19 runs were added, with Bullock ending with 6-41.

Denby made a depressing start and after 24 overs they had slumped to 53-6 and all seemed lost. Then Ian Parkin was joined by wicket keeper Peter Scott and these two stuck it out to put on 98 for the seventh wicket. Parkin was dropped on the boundary in the early stages but went on to make 95 not out and Scott added 34 valuable runs. The winning run came with three balls to go. Rutland went for the win right to the last, with Cassar taking 3-70 and Mark Baker 3-39 and contributed greatly to a memorable game.

Dunstall 214-7 drew with Wirksworth 153-6

Dunstall were well on top in this game but came up against Wirksworth’s strong defensive wall. Batting first Dunstall made good progress with useful knocks from Phil Simmons (47), Paul Shaw (32), Adrian Ball (55 not out) and Andrew Easter 35. Mark Woodward took 3-43 for Wirksworth and when they batted David Greatorex dug in with the determination not to be beaten. Slow he may have been but he was still there in the end on 68 not out . Kevin Hunter (34) gave him good support. Andrew Ball completed a good game by taking 4-30 for Dunstall

Chesterfield 224-7 drew with Clifton 171-7

Brad Edireevera was in excellent form for Chesterfield as he smashed the Clifton bowling in making 140. The rest of the side contributed bits and pieces and they ended up with the highest total of the day. Clifton’s overseas player, Ant Botha, also had a good game, taking 4-57 and scoring 66. Simon Moore made 50 to earn Clifton an honourable draw, albeit well short of the target. A good spell from Chesterfield’s Fran O’Neil gave him figures of 3-16.

Sawley & LE Park 169-6 beat Langley Mill 75 by 94 runs

Sawley have been showing promise all season, but without the results to prove it. In this game they gained their just reward. Sean Polley was their top scorer with 42. , but it was their bowlers who won the match for them, Rashid Shafayet taking 4-13, Neil Smith 3-22 and Ahmed Gondal 3-31. Rahim Karim performed well for the Millers, taking 3-35 and adding 34 to a depressing all out total.

Quarndon 148 lost to Alvaston & Boulton 167 by 19 runs

A win at last for A&B which will do wonders for their morale. Adie West turned in a match winning innings as he made 68, but Quarndon skipper Mark Tournier could feel satisfied with his performance in taking 5-32 and dismissing A&B in the 46th over for what was a modest score.. Duncan Player put them in a winning position with a hard hit 52, but the last word was with A&B’s bowlers Anthony Woolley who took 4-38 and Darren Pooley with 3-30.
