LCC President's Trophy quarter final

The Derbyshire Premier League 176-5 beat the Notts Premier League 173-9 by 5 wickets

The Derbyshire Premier League won the toss and opted to field. As the game developed this may have been a crucial decision because the heavy rain of the previous day had left some moisture in the pitch and this was exploited by Derbyshire’s seam attack.

Notts lost an early wicket when Mark Dale was out for 1 off the bowling of Ian Darlington. Malcolm Brown and Karl Glendenning were given a torrid time by the opening pair Irfan Ul Haq and Ian Darlington, but they remained firm and took the score to 48.

The introduction of Dave Hallack into the attack had an important effect. Bowling with accuracy and venom he slowed down the scoring and obtained the wickets of Glendenning for 21 and Brown for 33.

The arrival of Jim Hindson brought some urgency into the batting and when he was eighth man out for 43 the score had progressed to 158. There were some lusty blows from John Wakelin and Tom Savill who hit 21 off 7 balls and a respectable total had been achieved. For Derbyshire Dave Hallack took 3-29, Ian Parkin 3-41 and Michael Deane 2-27.

By the time Derbyshire went in to bat the pitch had eased and their openers, John Trueman and David Smit looked very comfortable until Smit was run out from a direct hit on the stumps when the score had reached 29.

John Shaw then struck two blows for Notts when he secured the wickets of Trueman and Johnny Owen At 52-3 Notts were back in the game, but there followed a stand of 94 between Jamie Benstead and Rob Attwood which settled the match. Benstead was bowled by Jim Hindson for 54 and Attwood was caught by John Wakelin off Tom Savill for 44.

The winning run came in the 38th over with a six hit by Dave Hallack. For Notts John Shaw took 2-23 and Tom Savill and Jim Hindson took one wicket each

In the next round, the Semi Final, Derbyshire will be away to the Liverpool & District Premier League. This game needs to be played by August 11th. The exact date and venue still has to be fixed.
