Smith man of the match as Ockbrook lift Jackson

THE JACKSON CUP FINAL PLAYED AT THE COUNTY GROUND DERBY ON FRIDAY JULY 26

Sawley LE Park 93-9 lost to Ockbrook & Borrowash 94-4 by 6 wickets

Scores were low, but this is a reflection on the accuracy of the bowling rather than the quality of the batting. Sawley batted first and struggled against all four bowlers used by Ockbrook, Trevor Smith (3-11), Ian Darlington (2-22), Brian Gladwin (2-23) and Alan Green (1-27). Top scorer for Sawley was Sean Polley with 21. His stand with Ahmed Gondal threatened a big score but it came to an end when Gondal was brilliantly caught by James Cokayne off Alan Green. Wickets fell at regular intervals, but they batted out their overs.

The Sawley opening attack of Ahmed Gondal and Neil Smith (brother of Ockbrook’s Trevor Smith) worked up a good pace and gave Ockbrook some cause for concern when they lost two wickets with the score on 47, both to Smith, but the entry of Dave Hallack restored the advantage in Ockbrook’s favour.

Smith and Hallack took the score to 81 when Smith was out to a smart catch by Gondal off Joe Greenhalgh for 31. Two more wickets fell before the winning run came in the fourteenth over, with Hallack still there on 35 not out. Neil Smith was the most successful of the Sawley bowlers, taking 2-20, with Rashid Shafayet and Joe Greenhalgh taking one wicket apiece

Ockbrook’s Trevor Smith was declared man of the match. Sawley’s Ahmed Gondal was batsman of the competition and West Hallam’s Peter Hort best bowler of the competition.

The trophies were presented by the Mayor of Derby, Councillor Robin Turner. Cheques were presented to the Mayor for his Charity appeal as follows, £100 for the War Memorial Village, £700 for the Meniere’s Appeal and £700 for the MAGIC (Cancer) Appeal.
